Kathleen Hwang, MD

Dr. Kathleen Hwang is a Professor in the Departments of Surgery/Urology and OB/GYN and Reproductive Sciences at The University of Pennsylvania. She is the Director of Male Reproductive Health and the Director of The Penn Medicine Men’s Health Center. She is a surgeon scientist with clinical interests in Male Reproductive and Sexual Health.
Dr. Hwang earned her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed her urology residency at the University of Virginia. She was a NIDDK K12 Career Development Program Scholar during her two-year fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Her primary research interests include spermatogonial stem cells, post transcriptional changes in sperm development, and she has an active laboratory involved in research on the biology and mechanisms of toxic disruption of testicular function, the genetic basis of infertility, as well as understanding mechanisms of wound injury. She has active funding from the NICHD and she is committed to translating lab bench discoveries to the clinic for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of male infertility.
She serves as an associate editor for Fertility & Sterility and Andrology. Dr. Hwang is past president of the Society for Reproductive Surgeons, the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction, and the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology. She is a member of the ASRM Program Planning Committee and is the Scientific Program Chair for the 2026 ASRM Annual Program.
