Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Review the current uses and applications of modern ECLS for patients with respiratory or cardiac failure/ arrest, including the basic physiologic principles underlying its use
  2. Discuss specific criteria to identify patients who are appropriate candidates for ECLS
  3. Provide education and have meaningful conversations with patients and families about the risks and benefits of initiating ECLS
  4. Identify cannulation strategies and ECLS circuit components, understand the rationale behind the selection of specific cannulation techniques
  5. Describe unique considerations regarding the management of ECLS in the pediatric and neonatal population
  6. Recognize the psychosocial challenges, including ethical considerations, as well as the importance of a multidisciplinary care team approach for ELCS patients
