Overview

This 12-hour online course* aims to introduce physicians and other healthcare professionals to the person-centered integrative East-West approach developed at UCLA Center for East-West Medicine over the last several decades. This model has been practiced for almost 30 years to address patients with chronic pain and other co-morbid conditions in four ambulatory clinic sites and our inpatient program at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center.

This series includes 4 different modules broken down by topics for ease of viewing.

*This is an on-demand activity which does not have a specific time or location designated for participation. The learners determine whether and when to complete the activity. The content can be assessed at any point during the lifespan of the activity and there is no specific time designated for participation.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define person-centered and integrative non-pharmacological approaches and understand their importance in addressing the chronic pain epidemic
  2. Highlight the importance of the mind-body connection and take into biopsychosocial factors when addressing patients with different pain conditions
  3. Educate on other therapeutic modalities to decrease unnecessary opiate prescriptions
  4. Describe the latest trends and evidence-based research in using non-pharmacological approaches to pain management
  5. Identify and explain lifestyle changes and self-care practices that patients can adopt
  6. Integrate the East-West person-centered approach to address patients with different pain conditions through case-based discussions
